Match Play Proves Successful For Golfers Across The Globe
The golf scene was buzzing with action across different continents this past weekend and golfers sporting Oakley eyewear were there to capitalize. The Sybase Match Play Championship took place at Hamilton Farm Golf Club in Gladstone, NJ and saw Spaniard Azahara Munoz claim the title over Taiwan’s Candie Kung. Across the pond, on the European Tour, Nicolas Colsaerts topped Graeme McDowell to win the World Match Play Championship in Casares, Spain.
Munoz who holds a Rolex Rankings Number 27 held off Kung to win 2 and 1 in the final round of the tournament for her first win on the LPGA tour. Munoz had a tough week after the passing of her grandmother and seemed to be playing with inspiration as she won six matches to take the overall title and $375,000 first place prize.
“It feels amazing,” said Munoz of her victory. “You know, I’ve been close a few times, but I just never knew if I was good enough to win. Finally having got it, it feels really good.”
On the men’s side, Colsaerts captured his second European tour title and a top prize check in the amount of $900,000. His victory was no walk in the park. Colsaerts had to overcome 2010 U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell for the victory. He nearly gave away a two-hole lead when he three-putted the 17th hole. However his par on the final hole confirmed his victory at one of the most prestigious tournaments on the European Tour.
“I can’t feel anything at the moment,” Colsaerts said. “To have my name next to so many major winners is a dream come true.”
His win brought him to tenth place in the Ryder Cup points standings. If the Ryder cup began today, he would be the last automatic member of the European team based on the current standings. Should he drop out of the top ten for some reason, many believe his performance at the World Match Play Championships should prove to team captain Jose Maria Olazabal that he is a legitimate contender for a captain’s pick on the team.
Congratulations to both Munoz and Colsaerts on their outstanding match play performances over the weekend and best of luck the rest of the season.
